Whether you're writing a blog, website copy or a facebook post - it pays to write well

brain_foodHaving worked in office environments for many years, writing is something that I have always done on a daily basis as part of my work - writing emails, letters, presentations, documents - the list goes on and on. Although it seems second nature to put what is in my head down into words, I know that I often waste a lot of time writing something and then re-writing it over and over until I have got it right. Well, I don't have time to waste anymore and this little set of guidelines is a timely reminder to write something right the first time...

So, whether you're writing a blog, website copy or even a facebook post - check out Magneto's Brain Food - Ideas for Better Business Writing. I have been subscribing to these email newsletters for years and recommended them to colleagues, and now clients, all the time. I think one of the key things to take away from Magneto's guidelines is point number "4 - Signpost: ...highlight your major points and write snappy subheads above them. Signposting your structure like this makes text highly readable....". This is so important when writing for the web - the way people read a web page is very different to offline sources of content. Headings, sub-headings and bullet points are quick and easy to read and to absorb, allowing the reader to quickly ascertain if this page is useful to them or not.
